I grew up on a farm with horses, goats, and chickens. Horses are elegant and intelligent, and goats are funny and cute. But chickens are extra special because they lay eggs–and lots of them. Our brood lays around one dozen eggs each day, so whenever I visit the family farm I always pick up a few eggs to take home with me. If you don’t have backyard chickens of your own, look for fresh eggs at the farmer’s market or co-op.

How to Wash and Store Farm Fresh Eggs

The rumors are true: farm fresh eggs look and taste so much better than supermarket eggs. I’ve even noticed that they are easier to cook. But before you cook them, you need to know how to store them and clean them. And you may be surprised to find out that unwashed, farm fresh eggs can be stored at room temperature on your countertop for weeks–the norm in most countries. That’s because fresh, unwashed eggshells still have their protective coating, or bloom. Wash your eggs when you are ready to eat them, or before storing them in the refrigerator.

How to Wash and Store Farm Fresh Eggs

Use hot water to clean your eggs. Unlike cool water, hot water does not open up the pores of the eggshell to bacteria. It also causes the inside of the egg to expand slightly, alerting you to any hidden cracks in the shell (discard any cracked eggs you might find). Lay one dish towel over a plate to gently collect the clean eggs. Rinse each one under hot water for a short time, using another towel for rubbing off any stubborn dirt or hay. Dry the eggs with a separate, fresh towel. Once washed, be sure to use the eggs immediately or store them in the refrigerator.

The other day I posted my review of Starbucks’s new seasonal Caramel Flan Frappuccino. I knew I was going to try the Caramel Flan Latte as well, so I was really happy when Starbucks decided to give them away for free today!

Starbucks Caramel Flan Latte Review

“Espresso with steamed milk and caramel flavors of creamy flan. Topped with caramel-infused whipped cream and caramel flan drizzle.”

Starbucks Caramel Flan Latte Review

The Caramel Flan Latte is as sweet and creamy as real flan. It has a stronger caramel taste than its Frappuccino counterpart, probably because the caramel-flavored whipped cream and caramel drizzle melts into the drink. I also preferred the stronger coffee flavor from the espresso/milk versus the coffee blended with milk and ice.

Overall, I think I like this seasonal flavor best as a hot beverage, but if the goal is to taste like flan then both drinks are winners! They are only here for a limited time, so be sure to check them out at your favorite Starbucks.
